New Site - Strands Computing

At last the new Strands site is up and running! The reasons for the delays are many, but mainly I had other commitments and plenty of Drupal 6 frustration at slow module update releases. But I don't mean to gripe - early teething problems are slowly but surely giving way to a much-improved CMS overall.

Drupal 6

The new site is built with the latest incarnation of Drupal, version 6, soon to be a giant leap forward over Drupal 5 and indeed any other CMS that I've tried. I say "soon to be" since some contributed modules have not yet (at the date of writing) completed the transition from version 5 to 6. Thus I couldn't always realise the features I wanted to very easily, so most of these pages are essentially hand-coded to get those effects, while others are using development versions of the modules. Of course this means the site is continuously being updated as new releases/updates appear.

Non Standards-compliant browsers?

Also it goes without saying that I'm still finding Internet Explorer problems, but since I'm focusing on standards, all but the ugliest of these will be put on the long finger, so my apologies to die-hard IE users ...

Drupal Modules used

Contributed modules used on this site include:
  • CCK - as mentioned elsewhere, this has become an essential module for every new Drupal site
  • Views - for most sites, almost as essential as CCK
  • Webform - also essential, at least for me
  • Formblock - I just recently discovered this one and have to say it does exactly what I needed i.e. prints a form in a block
  • Tagadelic - I just like it. At least I will when I've a few more categories ...
  • Similarterms - Just very handy to have
  • Devel - Another new development with Drupal 6; really speeds debugging and general development; fast becoming indispensable.

Feedback

The About page has some more details on some other aspects of the site. I'd love to hear any comments, suggestions or questions, particularly from my chief critic Mr. Ude.

(For anyone who cares, the sad old site is still here ... actually my very first complete Drupal theme and site.)
