About Strands Computing

strand (strănd) : One of the elements woven together to make an intricate whole

Seán O'Connell

Since learning to write simple games on the Apple IIe and ZX Spectrum in the early eighties, I've had an active interest in all things computer-related. I have a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Maths from University College Dublin and have worked with some of the industry's leading companies over the years. Thus I've had dealings in most areas of the technology industry at one time or another.

Technologies

As Strands Computing I work as much as possible with cutting edge open source products for both web development (Drupal, Wordpress) and diagnostic/repair work (open source security and repair solutions) and strive to conform to the latest W3C standards - not always a straightforward process, but a rewarding one nonetheless.

Green Strands

Strands uses electricity from local hydro-electric production (Taubenloch Hydraulic Power website, French/German only), an energy source relatively nondestructive to the environment.

Our hosting partner, Infomaniak, is likewise committed to a more environmentally-friendly approach to technology (Infomaniak Ecological Charter)

About this site

This latest incarnation of the Strands website is developed with Drupal 6 plus some add-on modules, although the content of each page is effectively hand-coded as many modules have not yet been updated for Drupal 6. The menu is inspired by this lavaLamp article from Ganeshji Marwaha. Animation effects are courtesy of the excellent jQuery library. The portfolio is the fShow carousel, courtesy of Saverio Caminiti, integrated with Lightbox 2.0. Many thanks to Sabra of Textweaver for the logo and inspiration for the design. Finally, this site is best viewed using a standards-compliant browser such as Firefox or Safari.
